Kirby Ocean Transport Company operates a small fleet of offshore dry-bulk barge and tugboat units which primarily transport coal across the Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana to Florida under a term contract with a large Florida utility company.
Kirby Ocean Transport also moves coal, fertilizer, sugar and other bulk cargoes on a short-term basis between domestic ports and occasionally the transportation of grain from domestic ports to locations in the Caribbean Sea.

The Engineer's maintain all major and minor vessel equipment. Equipment includes main engines, generator engine, electrical systems, hydraulics, air compressors, centrifuges, water systems, sewer systems, heating and cooling systems, and alarm systems. Engineers may be required to perform maintenance on barge equipment. The Engineer receive direction strictly from the Port Engineer, Capitan and Operation Manager.
The Vessel Assistant Engineer's primary function is to follow the Chief Engineer’s direction on maintenance repair of propulsion systems, heating and ventilating systems, and other mechanical and electrical equipment on tugboats and barges.
The AB performs deck department duties relative to operations and maintenance of assigned tugs and barges.
The Primary function of the Tankerman is to prepare the barges that are assigned to their boat for safe and complete loading and discharging of oil, refined and petrochemical cargoes.
Tankermen normally work a 12-hour day schedule (some watch-standing may be required), are occasionally required to work additional hours, but not to exceed 15 consecutive hours without rest. The schedule is equal time; 14 days on, 14 days off. During the 14 days on the tankerman will live and work on the vessel.

You will be responsible for all crew members and their adherence to all United States Coast Guard regulations and company policies. You will be expected to navigate the vessel in a safe manner and ensure safety rules are followed by everyone. You will be reporting to the Captain of the vessel and the shoreside vessel operations group. Applicant must hold a Master or Mate of Towing Vessels on Inland Waters and Western Rivers.

Tankermen prepare barges for the loading and discharging of cargoes, and perform all loading and discharging activities. They build tow by handling lines and cables to tie and untie barges and boats. Tankermen connect and disconnect transfer hoses. They perform scheduled vessel maintenance care for tools and equipment, and perform general housekeeping duties as assigned by their supervisor. They adhere to company safety policies and procedures and governmental regulations. They work under the supervision of the Captain/Master.
